Ding, dong one of the Warlocks is dead

Paul Weyrich, the founder of the Heritage Foundation and one of the great evil geniuses of the conservative movement is dead. The mastermind of the direct mail campaign and an inspiration to Rove, Abramoff and Norquist is dead at 66. My sympathies to his family. I hope he rests in horrible torment over the damage he did to the idea of democracy and rights for all. If there is a hell may he be be the eternal punk in that fiery jailhouse. That is my hope. That is my dream.

Let’s not forget that his ideas were not all his. Much of what become the movement to undermine everything progressive and democratic started with the Powell Memo.

Activism Marginalized

The fact that George Bush glibly dismissed the symbolic event of political activism in the form of a pair of shoes thrown by the Iraqi journalist, Muntader al-Zaidi, speaks volumes about his presidency. America is country with a history of violent suppresion of civil disobedience and it wasn’t until recently that political propaganda machinery, the press and physical marginalization became more effective and acceptable methods to trivialize the angry voice of the American people. What this reporter did was ballsy and incisive. It is the defining moment of how this disgraced president exits the world stage. Like Nixon smiling and waving as he got on the presidential chopper knowing that most of the country thought he was a crook. Bush dodged, condescended and arrogantly defended and admitted to undertaking a war based on lie. A war that killed hundreds of thousands of people and maimed just as many. He pushed aside the hurling shoes as a selfish act of a grandstanding Iraqi. In Arab culture what this act represents is calling someone out as being lower than dirt. The western press doesn’t seem to cover the second line shouted out by al-Zaidi, “This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq.” As a journalist he was expected to be objective and use a pen not a shoe. I think this act is purely objective, honest, focused and represents how most of the world still sees this country under this president. This is how Bush leaves office, not waving in state of denial, but dodging and condescending.  An aristocratically entitled criminal who will never pay for his crimes and doesn’t see that he committed any. Clearly the Iraqis and most of the world will never forget what he is.

How the Iraqis responded is varied and speaks to their struggle to become whole.
